Eryn looked about the park, making sure that nobody was around before she dashed over to the little stream. Filled with water after a week of nice rains, it looked calm as it ran slowly down toward the larger creek in the middle of Terre Haute. Little green eyes took another glance about to make absolutely sure before she started on her little experiment.
After a weird dream a few days ago, Eryn wanted to try to do something that she shouldn't be able to do. The dream was so strange! In it she was all grown up and lived in olden times. She didn't understand most of it, only that she dreamed about being able to see the future and use magic. That seemed pretty cool to a 10-year-old, so she decided to try something she'd always wanted to do.
Eryn was determined to walk on water.
She got to the edge of the stream and looked over at a small log that was sticking out. A big green frog was sitting there looking back. After a moment of silence, it made a little ribbit, as though he were inviting her out. "Ooooookay. Here I go." She said out loud before dipping a toe into the water. Seeing that it did not, in fact, stay on top, the little girl pulled it out. "Awww..." Came the disappointed sound before Eryn decided to try again.
She closed her eyes and exhaled as she put her right foot out, ready to take a full step. If she fell in, then that would settle it, but something made her want to try something silly. She thought of a little incantation and spoke it aloud, "I can do anything I believe in. I know I can..." She stopped short as her foot hit the water and stayed there. Ripples went out across the water and the hem of her jeans fell down around her ankle, floating in the water.
"Ohhhhh wow..." Was her near-breathless exclamation. After a few giddy heartbeats, she brought her other foot forward, stepping farther out onto the water. Her small green friend was watching curiously, or at least as curiously as a frog could look. He ribbited again and she giggled at him, taking another step forward. The hems of her jeans were now soaked, as they didn't seem to be affected by whatever was keeping her on top of the water. With happy excitement, Eryn took another step out and got ready to try jumping up into the air when she heard a voice call out.
"Hey, Erry!" Came the shout. It was her best friend Malcolm Coleridge, coming over the little levee by the stream. In a flash, Eryn turned around to see if he'd noticed what she was doing. Her mind slipped away from the excitement of walking on water to what kind of trouble it would mean if caught. As her thoughts went in that direction, into the water she went with a splash. The little frog hopped happily as he got covered with water, but jumped away when the little girl's soaked head popped up from underwater, glaring at the boy who'd interrupted.
"What're you doin' back? I thought you hadta eat lunch." She chided Mal, her voice taking a slightly unique, and identifiably Irish cadence. "Whaddya think you're doin' just running back across the park and startlin' me!?"
"Sorry, Eryn! I just wanted to tell ya I hafta go home for the night. Mom said so." Mal said dissapointedly. "Why are you swimmin' in the stream?"
"I waaas trying to catch that frog." Eryn told him seriously. Malcolm just stared back for a long time. Was he really that bemused? Was he dumbstruck over the idea that she'd try to catch a frog? No, it didn't seem he was. A dismissive hiss came from him, followed by a derisive retort.
"Yeah. You were trying to catch a frog. Tell me another one, Eryn. And you can walk on water I'll bet!"

What would have made this scene even funnier? If there was a group of Jesus freaks at the other end of the stream and saw what she was doing. They would fish her right out of that water and proclaim her the next Messiah!
